I Don’t Decide

October Roses 067

.

“I don’t decide which

defects get removed,

or the time frame in

which they get removed.

I ask God to decide which

defects stand in the way

of my usefulness to Him

and to others, and then

I humbly ask Him to remove them.”

.

Daily Reflections, p. 213

.

Suffering from a disease that wants one to isolate,

be alone, push away anyone who loves them

and to kill themselves the number and types

of character defects is as infinitely as varied

as there are alcoholics.

Make the list of your defects,

share it with your Higher Power,

and seek to find some balance, serenity

and peace of mind in your life.

The secret, be willing to change.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Self

October Roses 059

.

“For so many years

my life revolved

solely around myself.

I was consumed with

self in all forms –

self-centeredness,

self-pity, self-seeking,

all of which stemmed

from pride.”

.

Daily Reflections,   p. 71

.

False pride, ego, such a difficult thing to put aside,

such a difficult concept to comprehend;

that if I put the welfare and concerns of others

before my own selfish wants, I will become

the beneficiary of serenity and peace of mind.

The biggest problem was my ignorance;

I did not know what serenity and peace of mind were

and I had no idea that there were beneficial

to ones well being.

Thanks to the guidance of a loving Higher Power,

the fellowship of A.A., a sponsor, the literature,

and a few million friends, I now know serenity

and peace of mind and I understand that

the first drink can ruin it all.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Don’t Worry

016

.

“There may be some wrongs

we can never fully right.

We don’t worry about them

if we can honestly say

to ourselves that we would

right them if we could.”

.

BB p 83

.

A few key words for recovery:

acceptance, honesty, willingness

and doing the next right thing.

When we apply these qualifiers to all

of our decisions and we deduce that

we have done our best,

the promises will come true.

We accept that the past may be past,

that there are no weak excuses, only honest reasons,

that we are willing to change, to tell the truth

and to be the person God wants us to be,

then and only then will we have been thorough

and we will know peace of mind and serenity.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Subtle Harms

Lanai 017

.

“Such gross misbehavior

is not by any means

a full catalogue

of the harms we do.

Let us think of some of

the subtler ones which

can sometimes be

quite damaging.”

.

Twelve and Twelve,   p. 81

.

As it goes on to explain in the Twelve and Twelve

“We happened to be miserly, irresponsible, callous, or cold.”

And the list goes on, not just the major lying, cheating and stealing,

but mostly the selfish, self-centered, arrogant attitude of the drunk

that pushes away anyone who loves them.

The drunk becomes isolated and alone,

the way the disease wants them,

so that they can kill themselves without guilt and shame.

Today, to find peace of mind,

be thorough and honest as you work the steps.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Do Something

pine is clouds 092

.

“But in A.A.

we slowly learned that

something had to be done

about our

vengeful resentments,

self-pity and

unwarranted pride.”

.

Twelve and Twelve, p. 47

.

Feel miserable or do something about it,

change.

Some learn more quickly than others

but eventually those who find

peace of mind and serenity

learn to let go and let God,

to change what they can

and to be wise enough to know

what they cannot.

When it is no longer all about me

and I become willing to look at both sides of a story

life becomes a promise

that fills me with gratitude.

Today, get out of yourself, go to a meeting

and share your positive experience, strength and hope

with those who understand how hard it is to change.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Promise #4

pine is clouds 074

.

“We will

comprehend

the word serenity

and we will know

peace.”

.

BB pp 83 & 84

.

Better know as the Ninth Step Promises,

out of the twelve promises listed on these pages

this is probably the most significant to many

because of the word  ” comprehend.”

When the alcoholic stops drinking and the

physical fog that clouded the mind begins to lift,

comprehension becomes an awesome reward.

Serenity and peace instead of the constant noise

in the mind created by lying, cheating, guilt and shame

is a feeling that is worth all of the tea in China.

Today, don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t drink

and comprehend peace and serenity.

The Promises do come true if you work for them.

(Do The Steps).

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Quiet the Noisy Mind

pine is clouds 014

.

“Whenever I find myself

under acute tension,

I lengthen my daily walks

and slowly repeat our

Serenity Prayer in rhythm

to my steps and breathing.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 250
Grapevine, March 1962

.

.

Serenity and peace of mind, two of the more

rewarding virtues received by staying sober.

Just as every soul has their own concept of a Higher Power,

everyone has their own unique way of seeking the spiritual path.

Recovery is  body, mind and soul;

make sure your daily program gives time

to improve your whole person.

Today, quiet the noisy mind;

pray, meditate and walk slowly.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.
