Act Your Age

.

“Those adolescent urges

that so many of us have

for complete approval,

utter security, and

perfect romance –

urges quite appropriate

to the age seventeen –

prove to be an impossible

way of life at forty-seven or fifty-seven.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 330

.

At 49 I woke up and the kind folks from A.A.

were only too glad to show me that I was emotionally

only seventeen, still chasing skirts and keg parties.

Divorced twice and with a score of bad relationships

strewn out along the way, my alcoholic, self centered, selfish,

egomaniac who suffered with an inferiority complex

had no idea how to love, how to develop a healthy relationship.

The current relationship is going on twenty six years,

thanks to a Higher Power and the program of A.A.

Recovery is to start growing emotionally and spiritually.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

No Trust, No Love

.

“Most surely,

there can be no trust

where there is no love,

nor can there be real love

where distrust holds

its malign way.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 144

.

.

Trust and love appear to be the same word,

or in other words,

you cannot have one without the other.

God loves you and He wants you

to love yourself, the soul

that is anxious to do His will,

to do the next right thing.

Today, trust those who love you unconditionally,

until you learn to trust and love yourself.

Recovery is trusting in unconditional love.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

In The Right Places

.

“Once one is fairly sober,

and sure of this,

there seems no reason for failing

to talk about A.A. membership

in the right places.
. . . .

Word of mouth is one of our

most important communications.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 120

.

.

“Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all of our traditions.”

However, we are responsible

and when necessary we should be the hand of A.A.

that reaches out to the still suffering alcoholic.

Today, each situation is unique, should I or should I not

speak about A.A., when in doubt,

call your sponsor.

Recovery is to share your A.A. experience in the right places.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Prideful Righteousness

.

“The prideful righteousness

of “good people” may often

be just as destructive as

the glaring sins of those

who are supposedly

not so good.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 107

.

A swelled head can only block the view

of those coming into the rooms behind us.

Humility and gratitude will keep us sober.

Be yourself, everyone else has already been taken.

Today, be good, but not so good that

“prideful righteousness” will distort the reality

that you may see in yourself or others.

Recovery is to avoid prideful righteousness.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Full Privacy

.

“When we consult

an A.A. friend,

we should not be

reluctant to remind him

of our need for

full privacy.”

.

As Bill Sees It   p  102

.

.

Among many reasons, the negative stigma currently held

by society regarding alcoholics and alcoholism is a good reason

for the fellowship to protect its anonymity.

Each individual has their own reason for the degree of anonymity

that they desire and it is the responsibility for the fellowship

to respect their wishes.

Today, don’t hesitate to establish your boundaries.

Recovery is to respect the privacy of the fellowship.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

To Learn, To Serve And To Love

.

“This is why A.A.’s Twelfth Step

urges that we ‘practice these

principles in all our affairs.’

We are not living just

to be sober, we are living

to learn, to serve and to love.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 95

.

Stopping the drink was the easy part.

God did for me what I could not do for myself.

Learning to grow up, be responsible emotionally,

to learn, to serve, to love, is the really hard part.

Still not there  ?  ?  ? , progress, not perfection.

Recovery is to learn, to serve and to love.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Resentment

.

“As the book

‘Alcoholics Anonymous’

puts it, Resentment

is the Number One

offender.”

.

As Bill Sees It    p  98

.

Want to avoid resentments,

become a hermit.

Otherwise, living a normal life we will

always have those moments when God

or some stupid person will make something happen,

or say something that will offend you.

Today, forgive and forget and remember

nine out of ten times that God or the person

you are holding a resentment against

doesn’t even know it or even care.

Recovery is to avoid a resentment.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.
