Act Your Age

.

“Those adolescent urges

that so many of us have

for complete approval,

utter security, and

perfect romance –

urges quite appropriate

to the age seventeen –

prove to be an impossible

way of life at forty-seven or fifty-seven.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 330

.

At 49 I woke up and the kind folks from A.A.

were only too glad to show me that I was emotionally

only seventeen, still chasing skirts and keg parties.

Divorced twice and with a score of bad relationships

strewn out along the way, my alcoholic, self centered, selfish,

egomaniac who suffered with an inferiority complex

had no idea how to love, how to develop a healthy relationship.

The current relationship is going on twenty six years,

thanks to a Higher Power and the program of A.A.

Recovery is to start growing emotionally and spiritually.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Those That Promise

.

As individuals,

we can and should work

with those that promise

success –

even a little success.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 147

.

.

Don’t prejudge, that is the job of a Higher Power.

Never forget the paradox, I cannot keep my sobriety,

unless I give it away, but, don’t waste your time.

Work with those who want it, who promise

to go to any lengths to achieve sobriety.

The First Step is the best judge.

Today, protect your sobriety,

work with another drunk.

Recovery is to work with those who show promise.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Prideful Righteousness

.

“The prideful righteousness

of “good people” may often

be just as destructive as

the glaring sins of those

who are supposedly

not so good.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 107

.

A swelled head can only block the view

of those coming into the rooms behind us.

Humility and gratitude will keep us sober.

Be yourself, everyone else has already been taken.

Today, be good, but not so good that

“prideful righteousness” will distort the reality

that you may see in yourself or others.

Recovery is to avoid prideful righteousness.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Full Privacy

.

“When we consult

an A.A. friend,

we should not be

reluctant to remind him

of our need for

full privacy.”

.

As Bill Sees It   p  102

.

.

Among many reasons, the negative stigma currently held

by society regarding alcoholics and alcoholism is a good reason

for the fellowship to protect its anonymity.

Each individual has their own reason for the degree of anonymity

that they desire and it is the responsibility for the fellowship

to respect their wishes.

Today, don’t hesitate to establish your boundaries.

Recovery is to respect the privacy of the fellowship.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

To Learn, To Serve And To Love

.

“This is why A.A.’s Twelfth Step

urges that we ‘practice these

principles in all our affairs.’

We are not living just

to be sober, we are living

to learn, to serve and to love.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 95

.

Stopping the drink was the easy part.

God did for me what I could not do for myself.

Learning to grow up, be responsible emotionally,

to learn, to serve, to love, is the really hard part.

Still not there  ?  ?  ? , progress, not perfection.

Recovery is to learn, to serve and to love.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

When I Was A Child

.

“When I was a child

I acquired some

of the traits that

had a lot to do with

my insatiable craving

for alcohol.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 100

.

.

Inherited, born that way,

before I ever picked up that first drink

I displayed an addictive personality.

Selfish, self-centered, an egomaniac

that suffered with an inferiority complex,

the loner who wanted to isolate, be alone,

push away anyone who loved me

and to kill myself, even if it was to be a long

torturous death attributed to alcoholism.

Work the steps, identify yourself,

learn a new way of thinking and living.

Recovery is clearing the wreckage of the past..

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Don’t Be Disturbed

.

“I can see why

you are disturbed

to hear some A.A.

speakers say,

‘A.A. is a

selfish program.'”

.

As Bill Sees It p 81

.

Selfish is not a nice word, however,

an A.A. member who cannot selfishly

provide for and protect his own sobriety

has nothing to share with anyone else.

“First Things First” means that the first thing

that we place before our sobriety will be the first thing

that we will lose should we pick up that first drink.,

Recovery is putting your own sobriety first.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.
