Expectation Addicts

.

.

“A prayer for expectation addicts:

‘Show up. Shine. Let it go.’

Expectations shrink your shine

and weigh you down with

worry and equations.”

.

~ Danielle LaPorte

.

.

What did you really expect ? ? ?

Today, you can sit back and wait ,

knowing that eventually the train

will come down the track and run you over

or you can lay a new set of tracks that will move you

toward peace of mind and serenity.

Today, let a loving Higher Power lead you towards

a station filled with kindness, hope and forgiveness.

Today, share the shine, be the conductor

with no expectations.

Recovery is to show up, shine and let it go.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

And Change

001

.

“Man needs,

for his happiness,

not only the enjoyment

of this or that,

but hope and enterprise

and change.”

.

~ Bertrand Russell

.

Change.

The most important word in recovery is change.

My sponsor told me that to achieve sobriety

I only had to change one thing about me

and that one thing was everything.

Most importantly, the fellowship has taught me that

change is the only constant and that change is inevitable.

What I did for my recovery yesterday may not work today

so I need to work my program, go to a meeting and have faith

that my Higher Power, speaking to me through others,

will guide me through another sane and sober day.

Today, go with the flow, know that this too will change,

accept life on God’s terms

and you will be the happier for it.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Better and Better

.

“I can do the same thing

with an A. A, meeting,

The more I focus my mind

on its defects … the worse

the meeting becomes.

But when I try to see what

I can add to the meeting,

rather than what I can get out of it …

when I focus my mind on what is good about it …

the meeting keeps getting better and better.”

.

BB   p 420

.

There is no such thing as a bad meeting,

it is just that some meetings are better than others.

A good meeting begins with a group of drunks

who leave their egos at the door.

Patience, tolerance,

learn to listen and listen to learn,

learn from the message

but do not kill the messenger.

Always remember, some are sicker than others.

Today, make your meeting the best meeting in town

by keeping the meeting on the topic,

a topic which should be, experience, strength, hope

and not picking up that first drink.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

My Illness

.

“Alcoholism, not cancer,

was my illness,

but what was the difference.

Alcoholism took longer

to do the killing,

but the result was the same.”

.

As Bill Sees It,   p. 194

.

The DSM -5* gives the criteria for what constitutes

a disease and alcoholism meets all of the criteria.

For most diseases, just like alcoholism, there is no cure

only remission and for those who follow the suggestions

and work the Twelve Steps, remission is possible.

Today, don’t become a statistic on the disease side of the ledger,

don’t drink, go to a meeting, help another alcoholic

and become a recovering statistic that is happy, joyous, free

and more than glad to share their experience, strength and hope.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

I’m Better Off

Gainsville 035

.

“So I’m better off

if I don’t give advice,

don’t figure I know what’s best,

and just accept life

on life’s terms, as it is today –

especially my own life,

as it actually is.”

.

BB,   p. 450

.

Fear, I had to be in control,

do as I say, ignore what I am doing.

Helter skelter and bouncing from wall to wall

was the drunks perception of reality.

Today, work the program,

quiet the noisy mind and

don’t take yourself so damn seriously.

Have faith, know that doing the will of God,

doing the next right thing, usually means

offering your experience

only when asked.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

We Are Brothers

October Roses 062

.

“We recovered alcoholics

are not so much brothers

in virtue

as we are brothers

in our defects,

and in our common strivings

to overcome them.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 167

.

We are not bad people trying to become good,

we are sick people striving to get well.

A part of out sickness is the short comings,

the bad habits, that we developed

while under the influence of John Barleycorn.

The Twelve Step program of A. A. is a “WE” program

where we share our experience, strength and hope

with each other

so we can promote our common welfare.

Brotherhood, sisterhood, today,

come and join the fellowship

where we explore new ways

to get rid of old habits.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Giving Freely

Lanai 001

.

.

“I realize now

that giving freely

is God’s way of

expressing Himself

through me.”

.

Daily Reflections,  p. 217

.

.

Of all of the blessings, the promises,

the hope and faith that working the program of A.A.

offers to the recovering alcoholic the greatest

may be the opportunity to grow in closeness

with a Higher Power, who is love.

Getting outside of oneself

and becoming a channel of His love

gives the heart the chance to breath,

it allows the soul to become the person

the Great Creator wants us to be.

Today, live the paradox,

the more freely you give,

the more you will receive.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.
