We Become Lost

.

“If we cannot or will not

achieve sobriety,

then we become lost,

right in the here and now.

We are of no value to anyone,

including ourselves,

until we find salvation

from alcohol.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 81

.

“First Things First”, love the slogans,

they help keep it simple.

The first thing we place before our sobriety

is the first thing that we will lose.

Today, keep it simple,

don’t drink, don’t think, go to a meeting

and remember to pick up that first drink is to be doomed

to a life of jails, institutions or death.

Recovery is finding salvation from alcohol.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Don’t Be Disturbed

.

“I can see why

you are disturbed

to hear some A.A.

speakers say,

‘A.A. is a

selfish program.'”

.

As Bill Sees It p 81

.

Selfish is not a nice word, however,

an A.A. member who cannot selfishly

provide for and protect his own sobriety

has nothing to share with anyone else.

“First Things First” means that the first thing

that we place before our sobriety will be the first thing

that we will lose should we pick up that first drink.,

Recovery is putting your own sobriety first.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

The Sole Purpose . . . Of The Group

.

The A.A. group, as such, cannot

take on all the personal problems

of it members . . . This is why

sobriety – freedom from alcohol –

through the teachings and

practice of A. A.’s Twelve Steps,

is the sole purpose of the group.”

.

As Bill Sees IT p 79

.

A, A, is ” not” an employment agency, a bank, a landlord,

a marriage counselor or any other social service.

The primary purpose of A.A is that the members will help

each other find recovery and give the member a new way of life

where they can learn to resolve their own problems,

usually best done with the aid of a Higher Power.

Recovery is to help the group maintain its primary purpose.

Change For The Better

.

“Change is the

characteristic

of all growth.

From drinking

to sobriety, . . .

— all this and

infinitely more

represent change for the better.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 76

.

For starters, not drinking may be change enough.

People, places and things will be the next challenge.

Just keep going to those meetings, not drinking,

following a few suggestions and eventually

you will see the changes you have made in the

way friends and family interact with you.

Accept the better.

Recovery is changing for the better.

No Debate

.

.

“Fortunately,

A.A. is constructed

so that we need not

debate the existence

of God, but for best

results, most of us

must depend upon a Higher Power.”

.

As Bill Sees It    p  73

.

.

Change, what used to be the good old bar room

debate, God or no God, now becomes, for the

recovering alcoholics, a decision to accept or

not accept a Power greater than himself.

However, The Big Book does suggest that

relying on a Higher Power, not will power,

is the easier and softer way to achieving and maintaining

a happy, joyous and free recovery.

Recovery is not having to debate the existence of God.

Abject Dependence

.

“Nothing can be

more demoralizing

than a clinging and

abject dependence

upon another

human being.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 72

.

.

A symptom of the disease of alcoholism is “More”,

one is never enough.

When we rely upon another person the “we need more,

we want more”, will eventually drive that person away.

My disease wants me to isolate, be alone,

push away anyone who loves me and demanding more

is the best weapon the disease has.

Today, rely upon your Higher Power when you need more.

Recovery is never being dependent upon another human being..

A.A. Was Not Invented

.

“A.A. was not invented!

Its basics were brought

to us through the

experience and wisdom

of many great friends.

We simply borrowed and

adopted their ideas.”

.

As Bill Sees It, p 67

.

As far as human behavior goes

there is nothing new under the sun.

If it has a name, someone has done it.

Today, you are unique, however, borrowing

the best attributes of others can only improve

your outlook on life and your quality of living.

Recovery is learning from those

who have been there and done that.
