No Excuses

.

“If you really want

to do something,

you’ll find a way.

If you don’t,

you’ll find an excuse.”

.

~ Jim Rohn

.

Don’t lie, but be tactful.

Excuses are lies dressed up in fancy words.

Today, if you have a reason or even if you do not

have a reason to do or not do something,

be honest, do not make lame excuses.

Today, negotiate, accommodate, moderate,

compromise, just be kind and find an honest

mutual path to happy, joyous and free.

Recovery is never having to make an excuse.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Thoroughness and Honesty

.

.

“We went back

through our lives.

Nothing counted but

thoroughness and honesty.

When we were finished

we considered it carefully.”

.

BB p 65

.

Whether it is the first attempt to do the Fourth Step

or the ten thousandth time the Tenth Step is being done,

when we go back through our lives or back through our day

short cuts can only lead to a short temper.

Be thorough, be honest and be willing to admit

what part you had to play

in all of the estranged relationships

we left strewn  throughout our past.

Drinking or not drinking,

selfishness and self-centeredness are attitudes

and habits that can continue to work

against our being a healthy part of a relationship.

Today, no short cuts, live the Steps.

Thoroughness and honesty are the gateways to

serenity and peace of mind.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Self, Self, Self

November Roses 057

“Whatever our protestations,

are not most of us concerned

with ourselves,

our resentments,

or our self-pity?”

.

BB p 62

.

.

It was all about me, the drunk.

The only friend I ever had was the guy

who bought me my last drink.

The only relationship I could keep

was with the needy soul who believed my lies.

Denial was the only argument that I knew.

If I was not standing over you, gloating,

I was under you wallowing in self-pity

and building a resentment that was

driving me to drink.

With the guidance of God,

the Higher Power of our understanding,

and the fellowship of A.A.,

we have discovered that there is a better way.

Today, be Honest, Open-minded and Willing

to do the next right thing and be the person

our Higher Power wants us to be,

a friend, a loving companion, a sober soul.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

The Essence

November Roses 022

.

“The willingness to grow

is the essence of all

spiritual development.”

.

As Bill Sees It,   p.  171

.

.

The core, the gist, the heart,

what the main substance of the issue is

and in the case of recovering from the

compulsion and obsession to drink,

the spiritual condition is paramount.

Change.

To be Honest, Open-minded,

and Willing to grow is HOW the twelve step

program of Alcoholics Anonymous works.

Today, don’t drag your feet, challenge yourself

to make the change for the better.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

“A.A. as such should

never be organized

but we may create

service boards or

committees directly

responsible to those

they serve.”

.

Twelve and Twelve, p. 172

.

No president, no sergeant-at-arms, no rules,

just an honest desire to help others

achieve sobriety.

It has worked for these many years

and when in doubt,

New York will have a suggestion.

Today, be of service, find a home group

and be willing to make it the best group in town.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Step Eight

8. Made a list

of all persons

we had harmed,

and became willing

to make amends

to them all.”

.

BB p 59

.

.

If we were diligent and honest

in taking our Step Four inventory

we should have a list of those we have offended.

As with many of the suggestions in the Big Book

the only requirement is a WILLINGNESS to change.

Today, be willing, remember that recovery

is life, a journey into the unknown

and change is to be accepted if one

wishes to have a life that is

happy, joyous and free.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

“Serenity Prayer”

lanai (4)

.

“We treasure

our “Serenity Prayer”

because it brings

a new light to us

that can dissipate

our oldtime fatal habit

of fooling ourselves.”

.

Grapevine March,  1962
As Bill Sees It,  p. 20

.

The disease is cunning, baffling and powerful,

it makes the affected lie, cheat and steal,

to live a life that is far from reality.

The Serenity Prayer tells us

that we cannot change other people

or that we cannot change God’s world.

What the prayer tells us is

that the only thing we may change

is ourselves and our attitudes.

We must pray that a Higher Power

gives us the strength and courage,

the wisdom,  to change what we can.

Today, make sure that you are not fooling yourself,

talk with another recovering alcoholic and be honest

when they ask you how you are doing.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.
