Our Own Defects

.

“A clear light seems

to fall upon us all –

– when we open our eyes.

Since our blindness is

caused by our own defects,

we must first deeply realize

what they are.”

.

As Bill Sees It   p  11

.

You correction of that character defect

may not be to the liking of your mother-in-law,

however, for yourself, the change may be the light

that will guide you to a new life that is happy,

joyous and free.

Be willing, put a name on that defect,

and ask your Higher Power how you may best

become the person you and He want you to be.

Recovery is to realize what our defects are.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Your Higher Power

.

“You say the group

is your Higher Power,

and no right-minded A.A.

would challenge your

privilege to believe

precisely that way.”

.

As Bill Sees It      p 73
.

.

Why the stubborn know it all loves AA ? ? ?

Because there are no rules, only suggestions on how

we can stop drinking and move on to a life

that is happy, joyous and free.

How you follow the suggestion is an individual thing

which may be discovered by reading the literature,

listening to those in the fellowship,

who have been there and done that or

maybe even by a God incident.

As long as you don’t crave the drink, one day at a time,

follow your own rules, the ones that work for you.

Recovery is the Higher Power of your understanding.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

All Or Nothing

.

“So we shall
have to settle,
respecting most
of our problems,
for a very gradual
progress, punctuated
sometimes by heavy
setbacks.
Our oldtime attitude
of “all or nothing”
will have to be abandoned.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 6

.

One step at a time,  one day at a time.

“Easy Does It.”  *

“We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection.”  **

Today, follow a few suggestions

and try to work these principles into your daily affairs.

Recovery is abandoning the “all or nothing” attitude.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

The Whole Truth

.

“How truth makes us free

is something that we A.A.’s

can well understand.

It cuts the shackles

that once bound us

to alcohol.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 70

.

Why did I lie,

for the same reason I drank alcohol,

because I could

and I was addicted to the feeling.

When I could no longer stand the feeling of dread and doom

my Higher Power, whom  I wish to call God,

was benevolent enough to put a soul into my life

who told me that I did not have to feel that way, ever again.

Today, the fellowship, following a few suggestions

and telling the truth makes me happy, joyous and free.

Recovery is never fearing the truth.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

A Greater Personal Freedom

.

“When we come into A.A.

we find a greater

personal freedom

than any other

society knows.

We cannot be compelled

to do anything.”

.

As Bill Sees It    p 50

.

.

“The only requirement for membership

is a desire to stop drinking.”

The A. A. preamble says it all,

reinforced in Chapter Five of the Big Book’

“Here are the steps we took, which are

suggested as a program of recovery:”

No commandments, no vows, no must do list,

just the personal freedom to become the person

your Higher Power wants you to be.

Recovery is a personal freedom.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Not One

.

“In the first six months

of my own sobriety,

I worked hard with

many alcoholics.

Not a one responded.

Yet this work kept me sober.”

.

~  As Bill Sees It    p 275

.

At first, all I could give was my body,

sitting in a chair at an A.A. meeting.

Slowly but surely, as the fog lifted and

the voice of my sponsor started to come through,

I learned the basics of the A.A. program:

don’t drink, one day at a time, go to meetings,

and talk with another alcoholic.

Recovery is giving to others so that you can keep your own.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Admit It

.

“We have dropped anonymity

at this level because we think

our friends and associates

ought to know about A. A.

and what it has done for us.

We also wish to lose the fear

of admitting that we are alcoholics.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 278

.

.

Step One, “We admitted that we were powerless . . .”,

and by admitting defeat we were given the strength

and courage to face our disease head on.

This is the first of many paradoxes that A. A. teaches us.

Today, lose the fear and know that admitting

your alcoholism is the easier, softer pathway to

happy, joyous and free.

Recovery is admitting that we are alcoholics.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.
