The Selfish Ego

.

“We will only fall

when we follow

the voice of our ego;

for it is impossible

to stumble when following

the whisper of the Spirit,

because it never lets go.”

.

~ Kelly Young

.

The selfish Ego is self esteem on steroids,

the loud voice of pride that proceeds the fall.

Today, pursue the balance, seek the silence,

listen to the whispers of the Spirit as you

follow the path that leads you to doing

the will of your loving Higher Power,

doing the next right thing.

Recovery is following the whisper of the Spirit.

Ask

.

.

“He who asks

is a fool

for five minutes,

but he

who does not ask

remains a fool forever.”

.

– Chinese Proverb

.

The real fool is the know-it-all

who has never been there, has not done that

and has an ego that is too large to admit,

“I do not know.”

Today, remember that the only stupid question

is the one not ask.

Today, relish the opportunity to learn, to grow,

to make this world a better place

because you learned how.

Recovery is asking all of the right questions.

The Best Opportunity

006

.

“Knowing that

we can be loved

exactly as we are

gives us all

the best opportunity

for growing into

the healthiest of people.”

.

~ Fred Rogers

.

My God does not make any junk,

we are all made perfectly capable of doing His will.

Love is the cornerstone of recovery.

Today, share the love, unconditionally

and let you ego drift into the background.

Today, know that your love will help the world

become a healthier place.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Better and Better

.

“I can do the same thing

with an A. A, meeting,

The more I focus my mind

on its defects … the worse

the meeting becomes.

But when I try to see what

I can add to the meeting,

rather than what I can get out of it …

when I focus my mind on what is good about it …

the meeting keeps getting better and better.”

.

BB   p 420

.

There is no such thing as a bad meeting,

it is just that some meetings are better than others.

A good meeting begins with a group of drunks

who leave their egos at the door.

Patience, tolerance,

learn to listen and listen to learn,

learn from the message

but do not kill the messenger.

Always remember, some are sicker than others.

Today, make your meeting the best meeting in town

by keeping the meeting on the topic,

a topic which should be, experience, strength, hope

and not picking up that first drink.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Ego, Fear and Pride

.

“The immediate admission of

wrong thoughts or actions is a

tough task for most human beings,

but for recovering alcoholics

like me it is difficult because

of my propensity toward

ego, fear and pride.”

.

Daily Reflections,  p. 295

.

One of the more dominate characteristics

of the alcoholic is ‘nothing in moderation.’

The egomaniac who suffers with an inferiority complex

is off of every wall, below the gutter,

higher than the pink cloud but rarely

anywhere close to reality.

Sobriety, a Higher Power

and the Twelve Step program can

restore the alcoholic to sane thinking.

Today, thank God for a second chance,

go to a meeting and remember to leave your

ego, fear and pride at the meeting room door.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

A Few Set Prayers

November Lanai 005

.

“If not members

of religious bodies,

we sometimes select

and memorize a few

set prayers which

emphasize the principles

we have been discussing.”

.

BB,   p. 87

.

“If the only prayer you said was thank you,

that would be enough.”    ― Meister Eckhart

Too much ego will get one drunk.

We say a prayer of thanks to a Higher Power

every day to remind us to keep our egos in check,

to be grateful that we no longer have to live that way.

No matter where you find your favorite prayers,

Big Book, prayer book, internet, or you write your own,

just know that a prayer a day will keep

the drink away.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Self

October Roses 059

.

“For so many years

my life revolved

solely around myself.

I was consumed with

self in all forms –

self-centeredness,

self-pity, self-seeking,

all of which stemmed

from pride.”

.

Daily Reflections,   p. 71

.

False pride, ego, such a difficult thing to put aside,

such a difficult concept to comprehend;

that if I put the welfare and concerns of others

before my own selfish wants, I will become

the beneficiary of serenity and peace of mind.

The biggest problem was my ignorance;

I did not know what serenity and peace of mind were

and I had no idea that there were beneficial

to ones well being.

Thanks to the guidance of a loving Higher Power,

the fellowship of A.A., a sponsor, the literature,

and a few million friends, I now know serenity

and peace of mind and I understand that

the first drink can ruin it all.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.
