The Practice Of Prayer

.

“As the practice

of prayer continues,

I will find I don’t

need words,

for God can, and does,

hear my thoughts

through silence.”

.

Daily Reflections, p.322

.

Every thought is a prayer.

Silence is God’s opportunity to talk.

One of the benefits of sobriety

and of working the Twelve Steps of A. A.

is a discipline that allows one to practice

those things that improve one’s life.

Today, know that there is no right way to pray

and it is only by practice that you may discover

a way of praying that will be just right for you.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

An Individual Adventure

.

“Meditation is something

which can always

be further developed.

It is essentially

an individual adventure,

something which each

one of us works out

in his own way.”

.

Twelve and Twelve,  p. 101

.

All of recovery is an individual adventure.

We can identify but we are careful never to compare

our recovery, our prayers, our meditation or our lives

to others in the fellowship.

We listen to the stories of many

and then we take what we need for todays recovery

and leave the rest at the meeting knowing that tomorrow,

God willing, we will be at another meeting,

read some A. A. literature, talk with another alcoholic

and begin the adventure all over again.

When I stop growing you can feed me to the fishes.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Promise #12

.

.

.

“We will suddenly realize

that God is doing for us

what we could not do

for ourselves.”

.

Big Book,  p. 84

.

.

Better know as the Ninth Step promises,

it is understood that the sooner one works the steps,

honestly and to the best of their abilities,

the sooner the promises begin to come true.

When one realizes that the obsession and compulsion

to drink has been removed it is the beginning of sober life

that relies on a faith,  to trust that a Higher Power

who could relieve our alcoholism could and would,

if He were sought,

do many more things in our lives.

That by not drinking we will be restored to sane thinking

and He will show us a serene and peaceful way of living.

Today, let go and let God.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

His Own Conclusion

.

“And be careful

not to brand him

as an alcoholic.

Let him draw

his own conclusion.”

.

Big Book,  p. 92

.

You can tell an alcoholic,

but you can’t tell him much.

No one wants to admit to being an alcoholic

and it may take some time

and a few hints or suggestions before

an individual may be willing to admit

that he is an alcoholic.

Don’t push , even though it may be apparent

that your new friend may have a problem,

tell him your story, plant the seed,

and pray.

Some will die so that others may live.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

The Attempt to Improve

.

“In a consistent

attempt to improve

my conscious contact

with a Higher Power,

I am subtly reminded of

my unhealthy past,

with its patterns of

grandiose thinking and false feelings of omnipotence.”

.

Daily Reflections,  p. 327

.

“We will not regret the past

nor wish to shut the door on it,”

I have a disease that constantly wants to tell me

that I am cured, that I no longer have the obsession

and compulsion to drink,

that maybe I could do it right this time around.

This is why we go to meetings, to be reminded that

it does not get any better,

that the disease is cunning, baffling and powerful.

Today, leave your ego at the meeting door

and make the attempt to improve a conscious contact

with your Higher Power.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Control

.

“All of us felt at times that

we were regaining control,

but such intervals

– usually brief –

were inevitably followed

by still less control,

which led in time to pitiful

and incomprehensible demoralization.”

.

Big Book,    p. 30

.

I thought I enjoyed drinking.

I though my life would come to an end if

I could no longer drink.

I thought that somehow I could learn

to drink responsibly.

Thinking was obviously one of my problems.

When I stopped thinking, as suggested by my sponsor,

and I started to sober up, and I heard the stories

from the recovering alcoholics in the rooms,

it became apparent that to avoid the pitiful

and incomprehensible demoralization of the drunk

I would have to stop drinking, one day at a time.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

Many Different

.

“The basic principles of the

A. A. program, it appears, hold

good for individuals with many

different lifestyles, just as

the program has brought recovery

to those of many different

nationalities.”

.

Big Book, p. xxii 3rd ed.
Forward to the Third Edition

.
