Self-pity

,

“Self-pity is one

of the most unhappy

and consuming defects

that we know.

It is a bar to all

spiritual progress . . . “

.

As Bill Sees It, p 238

.

.

Poor me, poor me, pour me another drink.

Everybody hates me, nobody loves me,

guess I’ll go eat a worm.

It is/was always someone else’s fault.

A healthy body, mind and soul

has no room for self-pity.

Today, have faith, a loving Higher Power has

placed you upon this earth to do good and

self-pity is not on the good  list.

Recovery is devoid of self-pity.

Also Myself

.

“Under very

trying conditions

I have had,

again and again,

to forgive others

– also myself.”

.

~ As Bill Sees It, p. 268

.

I made mistakes, sometimes my judgements were

not of the best, I was driven by my disease to

do what it takes to get that next drink.

Today, the program of Alcoholics Anonymous

has taught me that if I do not forgive myself

the guilt and shame will lead me back to a drink.

Today, I forgive, but I do not  forget and I use the past

to keep me on the right path and to help others

by sharing my experience strength and hope.

Recovery is learning to forgive.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Don’t Waste Your Time

.

“When you discover a prospect

for Alcoholics Anonymous,

find out all you can about him.

If he does not want to stop drinking,

don’t waste time trying

to persuade him.”

.

~  BB     p. 90

.

.

Recovery is for those who want it.

The twelfth step says that to keep your sobriety

you must share it with others, however,

the wisdom of those who have gone before us tells

us that we should not waste our time with a drunk

who does not want to stop drinking.

Today, help yourself, help only those

who want to seek sobriety themselves.

Recovery is helping others, but don’t waste your time.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

A Working Mind

.

“What used to be the hunch

or the occasional inspiration

gradually becomes

a working

part of the mind.”

.

BB p 87

.

Because I spent no time indulging the obsession

or the compulsion to drink,

I had time to think clear thoughts.

Many of my first insights were thoughts of gratitude.

I was grateful that,

thanks to a Higher Power and the fellowship of AA,

a program of clean living and clear thinking

has been restored to me.

Today, I must work my program knowing that

I am still an alcoholic and that I must always

be on guard to make sure that the old stinking thinking

does not return and when it does, I have the tools to

help me do the next right thing.

Recovery is to restore a working mind.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Any Prejudice

.

“Do not let any prejudice

you may have against

spiritual terms

deter you from honestly

asking yourself what

they mean to you.”

.

~ Alcoholic Anonymous p. 47

.

As a drunk I was afraid to be wrong,

just one of the many fears that drove me to drink.

Confusing religion and spirituality only

added to my fear, I had no answer.

AA has taught me that I had no faith

and until I had faith in a Power greater than myself

I would drink again and to drink for the alcoholic

is to die.

Today, have faith, God will do for you

what he has done for millions of AA members.

Recovery is being open minded.

Demands

.

Demands made upon

other people

for too much attention,

protection, and love

can only invite domination

or revulsion. . . .

.

~ 12 & 12 p. 44

.

.

A demand is an expectation,

expectations are resentments waiting to be born

and for the alcoholic, resentments lead to drink

and to drink is to die.

Change is good, but in moderation.

If the drunk changes too much too fast and he expect others

to keep up with him, to give him what he wants,

one can only foresee that a negative response

is in the making.

Today, check your motives, know your wants and needs,

go slow, ask for guidance and when push comes to shove,

be flexible.

Recovery is seeking honest motives.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Our Inventory

.

“We finally saw

that the inventory

should be ours,

not the other man’s.

So we admitted our wrongs honestly

and became willing to set

these matters straight.”

.

~ AS BILL SEES IT, p. 222

.

.

It was always somebody else’s fault.

If they would have, should have, could have

only done this or that, everything would not have

had such negative consequences.

What part did I have to play in this outcome

became the fundamental question.

Yes, I may have been influenced by my disease of alcoholism

however, that could not be an excuse.

To clear the wreckage of the past, to clear head and heart

of the guilt and shame, I had to be honest and confess

to God and another human being the exact nature of my wrongs.

Recovery is initiated by an honest self-inventory.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.
