When I Was A Child

.

“When I was a child

I acquired some

of the traits that

had a lot to do with

my insatiable craving

for alcohol.”

.

As Bill Sees It p 100

.

.

Inherited, born that way,

before I ever picked up that first drink

I displayed an addictive personality.

Selfish, self-centered, an egomaniac

that suffered with an inferiority complex,

the loner who wanted to isolate, be alone,

push away anyone who loved me

and to kill myself, even if it was to be a long

torturous death attributed to alcoholism.

Work the steps, identify yourself,

learn a new way of thinking and living.

Recovery is clearing the wreckage of the past..

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Educational Variety

.

“Most of our experiences

are what the psychologist

William James calls the

“educational variety”

because they develop slowly

over a period of time.”

.

BB p 569 (Third Edition)

The ah-ha moments when one discovers that

things have changed and the root cause was

not drinking alcohol one day at a time.

Most importantly, we become aware that those changes

were mad possible by a Power greater than oneself.

“God was doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.”

The spiritual awakening is happening when we discover

that the promises are coming true in our lives.

Today, know that it does not have to be the burning bush

to announce a spiritual awakening, a gentle ah-ha will do.

Recovery is contingent upon a strong spiritual foundation.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Complete Defeat

.

“Who cares

to admit

complete

defeat?”

.

12 and 12   p 21

.

.

The egocentric, self-centered, selfish

Me, Me, Me, I, I, I, could not do anything

without thinking that I was in complete control.

What a rude awakening I had when I was told

that I had absolutely no control over my drinking,

that alcohol controlled my life.

Only by working the suggested Twelve Steps of AA

and by the grace of God,

which I choose to call my Higher Power,

have I been able to surrender

my will and my life over to His care.

And, as a blessing from above, the obsession

and compulsion to drink alcohol has been removed.

Recovery is a complete surrender to a power greater than oneself.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Remedies

.

” We have tried

every imaginable remedy.

In some instances there

has been brief recovery,

followed always by a

still worse relapse.”

.

BB p 31

.

The only remedy that has worked for me is:

“don’t think, don’t drink and go to meetings.”

I go to meetings to find out what happens

to people who don’t go to meetings.

The most nods and the most chuckles seen and heard

at a meeting usually occur when someone relates

how they tried the delusional remedies

and how they never worked.

Recovery is not drinking one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

An Allergy

.

“We believe,
and so suggested
a few years ago,
that the action
of alcohol on those
chronic alcoholics
is a manifestation
of an allergy: . . . “

.

BB  .  The Doctor’s Opinion

.

.

.

Some people eat peanuts

and their tongue and face begins to swell.

Some people put on a wool scarf

and a rash developes on their skin everywhere

the scarf touches.

Some  people drink alcohol and they transform

from Dr. Jekyll to becoming Mr. Hyde.

Science may one day isolate the genes, or missing genes,

that cause some to be able to drink sociably,

while others must drink alcoholically.

Today, do like other allergy sufferers do,

don’t touch those things which you are allergic to.

Recovery is to understand your allergy.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

The Program

.

“Outline the program of action,

explaining how you made

a self appraisal,

how you straightened out

your past

and why you are now

endeavoring to be helpful

to him.”

.

BB  p 94

.

Keep it simple.

You can tell a drunk but you can’t tell him much.

Cleaned up and with a sparkle in your eye

the drunk may not believe you at first,

that you drank alcoholically,

that booze controlled your life.

Be patient, listen, answer his questions honestly.

Always remember,

it is not how often or how much we drank,

it is what alcohol did to our feelings.

Recovery is working your program.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.

Stained-glass Windows

014

.

“People are like stained-glass windows.

They sparkle and shine

when the sun is out,

but when the darkness sets in,

their true beauty is revealed

only if there is a light from within.”

.

~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

.

A wise man in AA told me that inside the chest of every soul

there is a God Hole, and in that God Hole there is a candle.

For those who drink, the alcohol is trying it’s best

to douse out that candle.

In recovery, the candle begins to grow brighter

and the more we do for others the brighter the candle glows.

Those souls in recovery who have what I want glow the brightest

and even in the darkest of hours,

the stained glass windows of their God Hole

shows the way to recovery for any who wish to follow.

Today, be the light.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

God loves you and so do we.
