We Can Really Choose

We must never be blinded
by the futile philosophy that
we are just the hapless victims
of our inheritance,
of our life experience,
and of our surroundings–
that these are the sole forces
that make our decisions for us.
This is not the road to freedom.
We have to believe that
we can really choose.

Grapevine, November 1960

Today is a new day,

a new chance to choose something different,

hopefully something that is new, exciting

and good for you and those you love.

We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on It,

nor will we try to relive it every day.

Let go, let God, move on, get over it

and concentrate on today, making it a better day

because you didn’t get drunk,

you went to a meeting,

you helped another alcoholic

and you were so busy being happy

that you had no time to drag up the past.

Recovery is living in today.

Sobriety is a blessing from a Higher Power.
