Promise #8

“Self-seeking

will slip away.”

Better know as the Ninth Step promises,

this promise begins to appear

even before we are hallway through Step Nine,

making amends to those we had harmed.

As a drunk, rarely did we have true feelings,

especially when anesthetized and numbed

by the demon alcohol.

When we start to examine feelings in a true light,

not only our feelings but those of the people we had harmed,

we begin to recognize how selfish and self-centered

the disease caused us to be.

In recovery we begin to feel for others.

Today, get out of yourself, help another drunk.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.

And, if no one has told you yet today,

God loves you and so do we.
