how did I ever get

started again?”

Only to have that thought

supplanted by

“Well, I’ll stop

with the sixth drink.”

“What’s the use anyhow?”

Cunning, baffling, powerful and patient,

the disease of alcoholism wants the sufferer to forget

and continue the progressive path towards

jails, institutions and death.

Forgetting, denying, justifying, defending,

explaining, or making excuses for by reasoning

which is unhealthy and just plain idiotic

is the subtle manipulation of the disease.

Sometimes not to subtle,

the alcoholic drinks because he is an alcoholic

and no amount of reasoning can justify his drinking alcohol.

Today, don’t think, don’t drink and go to a meeting.

Recovery is one day at a time.

Sobriety is a blessing from our Higher Power.
